3D Models in the NFT space

NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) are all the rage in many places on the internet. While most NFTs seen out there right now are two-dimensional, 3D models offer a new potential for NFTs.

One of the most interesting potentials of 3D models as NFTs is the potential for use in virtual spaces. While a 2D NFT is usable in many ways as a piece of art that can be set as an avatar on many platforms or included in a curated collection (or traded or sold, of course), a 3D modeled NFT offers a whole new degree of interaction. A 3D model can be manipulated and, in a gaming environment, interacted with. As the metaverse comes into its own, 3D NFTs may represent the ultimate progression of the concept, as they will effectively be handcrafted objects in that space.

Creating and selling 3D modeled NFTs can be akin to creating and selling pieces of art at a local farmer’s market, especially if they can be transferred to a virtual environment. It can be set on a virtual shelf or table or yard. The result is akin to the decor you see in Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game housing systems. In these games, players can earn or buy decorations for their home with either in-game or real world money. Imagine if this decor was genuinely unique, more like a piece of fine art than something bought at a home goods store- this is the potential of a 3D NFT.

If your model can be designed to be 3D printable, this makes it even more unique as the design belongs to you or your client and can be brought into the real world. Licensing carries the same weight as typical 3D model marketplaces for CAD ownership. It can be displayed virtually as well as in the physical world, bringing a whole new dimension, so to speak, to an NFT. In this way, an NFT could function similar to a copyright for a certain unique design, as the NFT owner could print and sell the physical versions of the object.

Beyond their existence as 3D files, 3D modeled NFTs are much like their 2D brethren. They need to be created then transferred to an NFT marketplace. Most NFT marketplaces are currently optimized for 2D NFTs, though many are making room for animated NFTs as well. For 3D NFTs, however, there are not many options prepared to sell them in an effective way.

Luckily, here at Jawstec we’re preparing to launch our 3D Model Marketplace in May 2022. Here creators and customers can buy and sell 3D modeled designs. This includes but is not limited to 3D models suitable for NFTs, though our marketplace has special optimization to allow for NFT sale. Users will also be able to connect their Web 3.0 wallet, such as MetaMask, to the marketplace to buy and trade NFTs.

Another unique feature of 3D NFTs sold on our 3D Model Marketplace is that a physical version of that model will immediately go into production at our facility for shipment to your customer. Not only will the customer own the virtual version of the file but also have a high-quality, fully-finished physical version of it. To ensure this service provides the best in class service we at Jawstec pride ourselves on, models on our marketplace will undergo a basic quality control review to ensure they can print properly on our equipment. The end result is that your NFT customer will have an object they can hold, feel, and display in their home.

The potential of 3D modeled NFTs has not been truly realized. Our unique marketplace is going to be a wonderful way to either expand your NFT business or get into this new and growing field. Sign up for notifications so you can be among the first to join us as we embark on this new journey!
