What Is Multi Jet Fusion (MJF)?
Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) is an industrial 3D printing, additive manufacturing, process that uses nylon powder and precision fusing and detailing agents to create strong and accurate parts. MJF 3D printing is used in various industries today including automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and consumer goods to name a few. MJF 3D printing is widely used for durable prototypes and end-use production parts because it delivers excellent mechanical strength, tight tolerances, and fine surface detail without the need for support structures. It is a cost-efficient, low-waste solution for mass customization, functional prototypes, and components that require durability and dimensional accuracy.
Since it's an additive manufacturing process, MJF works by building a part layer by layer. The MJF process starts with a thin layer of nylon powder, spread across the build platform, and then a printhead selectively applies a fusing agent to define the part's shape and a detailing agent to improve edge definition and surface accuracy. Infrared energy then passes over the build area, melting the treated powder into a solid layer while the untreated powder remains loose and acts as natural support material. This sequence repeats until the fully formed part is built within the powder bed.
