Sometimes, to really make your print stand out, you’ll want to add an extra post-processing step. This can make your part shine a little brighter, change its color, or even improve its strength. Depending on the process you choose, your part can end up looking quite different — which can sometimes cause confusion.
Here’s a breakdown of what each post-processing option does and how it affects your final part.
Polishing Results
Polishing smooths out the outer surface of a part, giving it a glossy, refined finish. The result is a cleaner look and a more professional feel. If the part is dyed afterward, the polished surface can enhance the depth and richness of the color.
Dyeing Results
Dyeing changes the color of your part. Different materials offer different color options:

SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) parts start out white and can be dyed in up to nine color options.

MJF (Multi Jet Fusion) parts begin as gray and can be dyed in up to five color options.
While dyeing is mostly cosmetic, it can also provide practical benefits. For example, dyeing parts yellow or other UV-resistant colors can help reduce discoloration or fading from sunlight exposure over time.
Texture Results
Texture can be built into your part during printing and enhanced during post-processing. It serves both functional and cosmetic purposes. A textured surface can improve grip, make a part look more visually appealing, and even help hide minor imperfections or protect against wear, scratches, and UV exposure.
Vapor Polishing Results
Vapor polishing is one of the most popular post-processing options for its impressive visual and structural benefits. The process uses a controlled solvent vapor to slightly melt the outer surface, creating a smooth and glossy finish. It can also strengthen the part by improving layer adhesion.
One thing to note: vapor polishing can darken the appearance of a raw part. For example, an MJF part that usually looks light gray may appear much darker—almost black—after vapor polishing. This can sometimes be mistaken for a dyed part.
